CROI 2024 Highlights from HIV.gov

TargetHIV

CROI 2024, the scientific research meeting on human retroviruses and associated diseases, has wrapped up. While you wait for post-conference materials to be released in April on the CROI website, absorb these CROI highlights from HIV.gov. (Pull quotes are select HRSA resources on these topics.)

  • Long-acting, injectable ART is better than the daily oral regimen among people who were not adherent to pill taking. Also, long-acting ART was found to be safe and effective for adolescents with HIV.

Relatedly, see Long-Acting Injectables for HIV Antiretroviral Therapy from TAP-in, the TA provider for Ending the HIV Epidemic jurisdictions.

  • Young children started on ART within 48 hours of birth were able to maintain undetectable viral levels a year after their HIV regimens were put on pause. Ongoing research will need to determine more about this so-called HIV remission.
  • DoxyPEP is effective, with dramatic drops across all bacterial STIs, as reported in a first-ever population study, carried out in San Francisco, an early adopter of DoxyPEP.
  • Community members are involved in HIV research and HIV prevention research in the HPTN 096 trial to assess four interventions to reduce HIV among black MSM in the Southern U.S.

See the Best Practices Compilation on HIV interventions focused on MSM.)

  • The weekly injection semaglutide is effective in reducing liver fat (and thus associated liver disease) in people with HIV--the first-ever clinical trial undertaken.
  • The vaginal ring and PrEP are both effective as HIV prevention techniques among pregnant women, whose chances or acquiring HIV are higher in comparison to non-pregnant women.
  • The risk of cardiovascular events is high among people with HIV, particularly among certain groups.

Consult the National HIV Curriculum for HIV treatment strategies.
